The authors take a very tough position on determination of parental unfitness.They say that a diagnosis of mental illness or substance abuse should only be considered disqualifying for child custody if theparent’s inadequacy is so great that it would justify taking a child away from parents who are not divorcing.Many fathers lose their kids without anything near what would be required for parental unfitness.

Scientific article on custody evaluations
